Q: What can I hope to achieve by learning Muay Thai [Thai-boxing]?
There are many different reasons people choose to learn the art of Muay Thai.  Boxers have slightly different goals from the person next to them.  We have boxers training for fitness and/or self-defense, as well as for competition.

Some other benefits include:

  • Improving overall fitness level
  • Confidence
  • Strength and muscle tone
  • Flexibility
  • Self-defense
  • Cardiovascular exercise
  • Coordination/agility
  • Mental Focus

Q: Do you offer Muay Thai classes for people of all ages?
Freestyle Muay Thai offers group training sessions for adults ages 16 and older.  Our Muay Thai Kids program is currently enrolling children between the ages of 6-15 years old.  Both private "one-on-one" and private "group" training is offered for men, women and children of all ages.

Q: What is the best way to get started in Muay Thai?
Every individual has a different way of learning.  We offer both private and group training.  If you have absolutely no martial arts experience at all and feel uncomfortable starting with our group training, private training may be the best option.  Private training can help to familiarize you with some of the basic skills and techniques before entering the group setting.

Q: Do I need to be in shape to start learning Muay Thai?
There is nothing that will truly prepare you for Muay Thai.  This is an art that you must get acclimated with through dedication and hard work.  It is a challenge both physically as well as mentally. Everyone trains at their own pace but there is a competitive motivation to work harder and faster within the school.

Q: What type of equipment and clothing is required?
The required equipment for training sessions are handwraps, bag gloves and shin guards.  Muay Thai shorts and loose fitting gym shirts are worn by most boxers.  The required equipment for sparring is 16 oz. training gloves, a mouthpiece, groin protection and/or bra protection and headgear.  Optional equipment is as follows: wrestling/martial arts shoes, ankle supports and heavy jump rope.  Boxers are only required to wear gym type clothing for their first group or private training session.

Q: Do I need to eat a special diet in order to be successful in Muay Thai training?
There is no special diet required to begin your training, however, as a certified fitness professional having experience with the correlation between nutrition and training, we can guide you toward leading a healthier lifestyle that can enhance your performance.

Q: Are there any contracts that I need to sign in order to begin training with Freestyle Muay Thai?
There is only a general health and injury waiver that must be completed and signed upon beginning your training.  Group training can be done on a month-to-month basis with no obligations and private training has different pricing plans depending on the length and # of the sessions selected.  Payment for group sessions is due at the first of the month and can be pro-rated for students who begin their training during the month.  Longer commitment group and/or private training packages are also available with reduced pricing plans.

Q: How long will it take me to learn Muay Thai?
The average time it takes an individual to feel comfortable with identification and application of basic techniques/skills is between three to four months.  When training Muay Thai, you are constantly learning how to become a more efficient, and intelligent boxer.  Your body will continually adapt to be able to deliver greater speed, balance and power into your training.  Testing protocols have been put into place in order to guide your learning curve and goals.

Q: Do I have to spar at the school?
Sparring is completely optional and no one is pressured into the ring.  Sparring can be a part of the natural progression of a Muay Thai boxer.  Sparring can be used as a great tool for both the trainer and the boxer to key in on both strengths and weaknesses.  Sparring can also be used as a measure of overall improvement in Muay Thai.
